Cutting Technique
Every Gemstone Has Its Finest Form.
At Pamir Gems, we believe every gemstone has a form in which it can truly shine. Finding that form takes experience, patience, and a genuine understanding of the stone itself.
Over the years, we have developed our own approach to cutting and polishing, shaped by the countless gemstones that have passed through our hands. It is something we take seriously, and it is a standard we apply to every stone in our collection.
Whether we begin with a piece of rough, a preform, or a gemstone that has already been cut and polished by another cutter, our work does not stop there. Every stone goes through our own cutting and finishing process before we consider it ready.
Beyond Traditional Cutting
Gemstone cutting has a long history, with different parts of the world developing their own techniques and ways of working. As diamond cutting advanced, many of its principles were also applied to colored gemstones. The results could be beautiful, but the approach did not always make the most of what each individual gemstone had to offer.
Over time, different cutting traditions emerged. Indian step cuts, German precision, and the cutting traditions of Sri Lanka, Burma, and Africa each brought their own strengths and priorities. Some approaches focus on retaining weight, others on preserving color, achieving particular dimensions, or maximizing brilliance.
We respect these traditions and the knowledge behind them. But at Pamir Gems, we have learned that no single approach works best for every stone.
We believe the gemstone should guide the cut, not the other way around.
Understanding the Stone
No two gemstones are exactly alike. Even stones of the same variety can behave very differently once you begin working with them. Their color, internal characteristics, transparency, and natural structure all influence what is possible.
This is why we do not simply take a stone and apply a standard cut to it. We spend time examining it, understanding its strengths, and deciding how best to bring them out.
Sometimes this means looking at a stone for hours before making a decision. Other times, the cutting and refinement itself can take days. We consider the proportions, how the light moves through the stone, and how its natural color can be presented at its best.
Our goal is not simply to produce a gemstone of a particular weight or size. It is to find the best form that stone can take.
We want to reach a point where further adjustments would no longer improve the overall result. Knowing when to make a change is important, but knowing when to stop is just as important.
Every Stone Goes Through Our Hands
Our cutting philosophy applies to every gemstone we handle, regardless of where it comes from or what stage of preparation it is in.
A rough gemstone may need to be shaped from the beginning. A preform may need further refinement. Even a stone purchased from another cutter, already faceted and polished, must meet our standards before it becomes part of the Pamir Gems collection.
We do not assume a stone is finished simply because it looks finished. We examine it for ourselves and determine whether anything more can be done to improve it.
This is how we maintain consistency across our collection. Not by making every gemstone look the same, but by giving every gemstone the attention it deserves.
Our Approach to Polishing
Cutting gives a gemstone its shape, but polishing is what brings the finished surfaces to life.
Over the years, we have developed our own in-house polishing technique, adapting our approach through experience with different gemstones and their individual characteristics. It is an important part of our process, not merely the final step before a stone is ready.
We pay close attention to the finish of each facet and how the polished surface allows the gemstone's natural color and brilliance to come through. The aim is a clean, refined finish that does justice to the work that has gone into the cut.
It is a detail that might go unnoticed at first glance, but for us, it makes a difference.
A Standard We Stand By
We have never believed that cutting a gemstone is simply about following a pattern or reaching a target weight. It is about understanding what you have in front of you and making the most of it.
That takes time, and sometimes it means spending far longer on a stone than expected. But we believe that time is part of doing the job properly.
Our techniques continue to develop as we gain more experience, but the principle remains the same: every gemstone deserves the opportunity to reach its finest form.
This is how we cut at Pamir Gems. Not by following one formula for every stone, but by finding what works best for each individual gemstone.
