KUHI-LAL, TAJIKISTAN

Where Our Story Begins.

Nestled in the mountains of Badakhshan, near the Panj River, lies Kuh-i-Lal, one of the most historically significant sources of red spinel in the world.

For centuries, these mountains have yielded remarkable gemstones that travelled far beyond their place of origin, finding their way into royal treasuries, treasured ornaments, and some of history's most celebrated jewels. Known historically as la'l, these red gems were admired long before modern gemology distinguished spinel from ruby.

For Pamir Gems, Kuh-i-Lal is more than a historic mining site. It represents our heritage, our founder's experience as a miner, and a lasting connection to the land that inspired our journey.

Although mining activity at Kuh-i-Lal has largely ceased, its legacy continues through the gemstones that remain in circulation and the knowledge passed down through generations. Today, we carry that connection forward by bringing the natural beauty of the region's gemstones to life through careful selection, precision cutting, and finishing.
